IUHS Faculty Strengthen Assessment Literacy Through Workshop on Effective Assessment Design

Karachi, June 18, 2026 – The Department of Health Professions Education at Indus University of Health Sciences (IUHS) organized a focused workshop on designing high-quality assessment items, bringing together faculty members from across the university for an engaging and practice-oriented learning experience.

Facilitated by Dr. Madiha Ata from the Department of Health Professions Education, the workshop emphasized the practical aspects of developing assessment items that accurately measure intended learning outcomes while encouraging meaningful student learning. Moving beyond theoretical concepts, the session provided participants with hands-on strategies to enhance the quality and effectiveness of their assessments.

Drawing on established item-writing frameworks, including those recommended by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), Dr. Madiha Ata combined best practices with locally relevant clinical examples, enabling faculty members to apply the concepts directly to their own courses and examinations.

The workshop was attended by more than 20 faculty members representing a range of disciplines across IUHS, including physiotherapy, family medicine, public health, and medical technology. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants explored techniques for creating valid, reliable, and learner-centered assessment items.

This initiative reflects the Department of Health Professions Education’s ongoing commitment to strengthening assessment literacy across IUHS. By equipping educators with the knowledge and tools required to design high-quality assessments, the department continues to support the quality, credibility, and educational excellence of academic programs throughout the university.
