Basics of Pediatric Oncology-Nursing Course
Introduction
The Basics of Pediatric Oncology-Nursing Course is designed to equip nurses and nursing technicians with essential knowledge and skills in pediatric oncology care. Through a blended platform for recorded lectures and online interactive sessions, it will enable participants to understand different skills like management of venous access devices, assistance with bone marrow and intrathecal procedures, and administration of blood products. It aims to educate them about the handling and administration of chemotherapy and about infection control protocols in pediatric oncology patients. It will also give them an overview of symptomatic management, nutrition, patient and family education, and palliative care. By the end of the program, nurses will be better equipped to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care in pediatric oncology settings.

Program Objectives
- Describe common pediatric cancers and their key treatment modalities.
- Discuss the importance of early identification and response to oncological emergencies.
- Discuss the essential nursing management steps for handling venous access devices and assisting bone marrow and intrathecal procedures.
- Explain the steps of administering blood products to pediatric oncology patients; monitor for adverse reactions; and provide appropriate care.
- Explain the principles of safe handling and administration of chemotherapy drugs.
- Discuss the recognition and management of immediate complications of chemotherapy drugs.
- Explain infection control protocols in immunocompromised patients to reduce the risk of infections.
- Recognize the importance of supportive care (i.e., symptomatic management, nutrition, and patient and family education) in managing pediatric oncology patients.
- Discuss the principles of palliative care, counseling for grieving parents, and survivorship in pediatric oncology.
Scope of Practice
At the end of the course the participants will have comprehensive knowledge of common pediatric cancers and pediatric oncology nursing care. They will also be able to incorporate safe clinical practices such as managing treatment-related complications, handling specialized procedures and chemotherapy medications and providing holistic care to patients and their families within their professional scope and in collaboration with the healthcare team.
